DEMOCRACY THROUGH SPORT

WHO ARE WE

DemSport is a non-governmental organization established in 2020 in Pristina, Kosovo. Our work focuses on delivering initiatives that will enable the sustainable development of societies, through promoting the societal role of sport, enhancing health through sports and physical activity policies, and social inclusion in and through sports of underrepresented groups of society. DemSport has three priorities that will focus its main projects, which are:

  1. Society and sport – education, health and diplomacy
  2. Human Rights- Education IN Sport and THROUGH sport
  3. Equality and Development – integrity, accountability, and transparency of institutions, and economic dimension of sport and physical activity

OUR PROJECTS

“SAFE AND INCLUSIVE SPORT”

provided the first opportunity for the sports community in Kosovo, to increase their knowledge and capacities regarding Human Rights and the interlink with the sports sector.  26 participants from 12 municipalities in Kosovo, representing 7 different sports, attended the training “Safe and Inclusive Sport”. The participants during the third day of the training had the opportunity to meet with the Deputy Minister of Sports, Ms. Daulina Osmani, former swimmer athletes, with whom they discussed issues related to human rights and sports, and presented the group recommendations regarding the need to improve the human rights in the sports sector. The Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Culture in Kosovo financially supported the project.

"EDUSPORT- Human Rights Education through Sport”

Pristina Athletes have been part of a training on human rights education, for the first time in their professional careers. In October 2022, DemSport trained 23 young people from 13 sports clubs of the capital of Kosovo regarding human rights. They have analyzed with the non-formal education trainers, the legal mechanism that exist in the country as well as the international perspective. The participants have also discussed their concerns, ideas, and needs with the director of the sports department at the Municipality of Pristina Mr. Granit Rugova, a former basketball player. The project was financially supported by the Municipality of Prishtina.  

“Guardians of Equality”

is a project that aims to raise awareness of women and the municipal local level in Kosovo, on the importance that physical activity has in the well-being of girls and women. Within the project, DemSport has developed a research with women in municipalities of Ferizaj, Graçanica, Pristina and Prizren, to firstly analyze the physical activity (or inactivity) of women, and the public spaces available for physical activities. 

This activity is supported by Kosovar Civil Society Foundation (KCSF) program ‘EJA Kosovo’, co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Sweden, and Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
